Calcium Carbonate

Due to the widely varying material characteristics of different types of calcium carbonate, the efficient handling and feeding of this material requires some expertise

The design of a feeding or pneumatic conveying system is heavily influenced by a bulk solid’s particle shape, size (aspect ratio) and particle size distribution as well as the particle’s roughness, hardness (abrasiveness), and density. In the case of calcium carbonate these characteristics vary widely depending on the source and production process of the individual bulk material. As a consequence, pneumatic conveying systems cannot be purchased "off-the shelf" and must be engineered for each situation individually. Laboratory tests are often necessary to help determine a material’s properties and behavior.

Coperion K-Tron has the necessary expertise for developing systems and providing components tailored to your specific CaCO3 handling and feeding needs within your production facility. In addition, we can provide full-scope material testing at our professional and fully equipped testing facilities, located around the globe.

Application Example

K2-ML-T60 Twin Screw Feeder on SFT load cells, suitable for feeding calcium carbonate

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is one of the most popular mineral fillers used in the plastics industry. In this application example, the customer needed to transfer 4.5 t/h (10,000 lb/h) of calcium carbonate from a storage bin to a filter receiver located on top of a rotary valve for the extrusion of PP and CaCO3 at a plastics compounding facility. The facility is located at 305 m (1000 ft) elevation with an average daily temperature of 29.5°C (85°F) during the entire year.

After the customer gave us two different samples of CaCO3 to test, it was decided to completely redesign the previously foreseen system layout. The significant particle characteristic differences between the samples led to the selection of different equipment components as well as a different sizing of the entire system.
