Direct expanded products include cereals, snacks and the meat substitute TVP (Texturized Vegetable Proteins). During their production, they expand directly as they exit the twin screw extruder. Their volume increases abruptly and their shape stabilizes within a very short time. Cereals and snacks are ready to eat products directly after drying and optional coating. TVP is made from vegetable proteins and must first be hydrated in water or other liquids before preparation.
In this video, you will get an insight into the manufacturing process of direct expanded products. Coperion's ZSK food extruder and ZGF centric pelletizer are characterized by their simple start-up process. Adjusting just a few process parameters such as water content, screw speed and temperature, can change the product properties to the desired profile. Product samples can be taken very easily directly at the ZGF pelletizer.
