Nitrogen Conveying Systems: Safe and Gentle Conveying of Demanding Bulk Materials

In many industrial processes, pneumatic conveying is the preferred method of transport for bulk materials.

Pneumatic conveying  becomes particularly challenging when products are sensitive to oxygen or moisture, or when there are high safety requirements for the system. In such cases, Coperion implements closed-loop nitrogen conveying systems.

When air is not an option

While ambient air is used as the conveying medium in most pneumatic conveying systems, there are applications where this is not possible or advisable. For example, oxygen or humidity can impair product quality or trigger undesirable reactions. At the same time, potential dust or gas explosions must be prevented in certain processes.

This is where Coperion’s closed-loop nitrogen conveying systems come into play. They create an inert conveying atmosphere, thereby enabling the safe transport of sensitive bulk materials. They make an important contribution to product quality and process safety.

Closed-loop system for maximum safety

The operating principle of a nitrogen conveying system is simple: The nitrogen circulates within a closed system and is continuously reused. This keeps inert gas consumption low and prevents ambient air from entering the process.

Typically, the system is operated under slight overpressure. A compressor generates the necessary conveying pressure for the gas flow. At the end of the conveying system, the nitrogen is separated from the bulk material, purified, and returned to the cycle.

A key advantage of this Coperion technology lies in consistent product quality and high operational reliability, even over long conveying distances or in complex plant configurations.

Protection for product and plant

Coperion’s nitrogen conveying systems meet high safety standards. Gas coolers prevent excessive heating of the conveyed medium and protect both the plant equipment and temperature-sensitive products.

Rotary valves precisely feed the bulk material into the conveying stream while simultaneously acting as gas barriers. This minimizes nitrogen loss and prevents the ingress of foreign gases.

Safety filters ensure that no product particles enter the recirculated nitrogen. This maintains the quality of the conveying gas over the long term and ensures high operational reliability of the system.

Customized solutions for demanding conveying tasks

The requirements for modern conveying systems vary significantly depending on the bulk material and process. Conveying distances, product characteristics, safety requirements, and quality objectives must all be taken into account.

With decades of experience in bulk material handling and pneumatic conveying, Coperion develops conveying solutions tailored to each specific application. Particularly with nitrogen conveying systems, operators benefit from our deep understanding of process engineering know-how as well as from solutions that optimally combine safety, product quality, and cost-effectiveness.

Coperion nitrogen conveying systems make an important contribution to stable processes, high product quality, and safe production – wherever conventional conveying concepts reach their limits.
